How to Play Mindful Choices

The Mindful Choices Board Game can be played in several different modes, depending on the players' preferences and the context. Here's an overview of the standard game:

Setup:

  1. Each player selects a Character Profile and corresponding token
  2. Place all player tokens on the Start space on the game board
  3. Shuffle the Dilemma Cards, Reflection Cards, and Value Cards and place them on their designated spaces
  4. Place Consequence Tokens within reach of all players
  5. Choose whether to play the Competitive or Collaborative version

Basic Gameplay:

  1. On your turn, roll the Decision Die and move your token the indicated number of spaces
  2. Draw a card from the deck indicated by the space your token lands on
  3. For Dilemma Cards: Read the scenario aloud and make your choice between the options
  4. For Reflection Cards: Answer the question and facilitate a brief discussion
  5. Collect Value Cards and/or Consequence Tokens based on your choices
  6. Play continues clockwise until all players reach the end of the path

Game Modes:

Competitive Mode:

In this mode, players try to collect Value Cards that match their Character Profile's hidden values while navigating the consequences of their choices. The player whose final collection of Value Cards and Consequences best aligns with their Character's goals wins the game.

Collaborative Mode:

Players work together to create the most balanced "society" by making complementary choices that represent diverse value systems. Success is measured by how well the group collectively covers all six core values while minimizing negative consequences.

Exploratory Mode:

This version focuses on discussion rather than winning. Players make choices and then explain their reasoning, with no scoring system. This mode is ideal for educational settings or for players more interested in philosophical exploration than gameplay.

Facilitation Tips:

  • Allow players time to consider their choices without pressure
  • Encourage players to explain their reasoning rather than just stating their decision
  • Use the discussion questions provided on the Reflection Cards
  • Consider a brief debrief at the end of the game to discuss insights gained
  • For younger players or those new to philosophical thinking, use the Family Version rules

As a philosophy professor, I'm always looking for engaging ways to introduce ethical thinking to my students. This game has been transformative in my introductory ethics class. Students who normally wouldn't speak up during theoretical discussions become animated when playing Mindful Choices, and the conversations continue well after class ends. The quality of the materials is excellent, and the scenarios are sophisticated without being overly complex.

Our family game nights have been completely transformed by Mindful Choices. Instead of the usual competitive atmosphere, we're having deep conversations about values and ethics. My teenagers are particularly engaged—they love challenging each other's thinking and explaining their choices. It's helping us understand each other on a deeper level. The game is beautifully designed and the scenarios are relevant and thought-provoking.

I use this game in corporate team-building workshops, and it's been incredibly effective at helping colleagues understand each other's decision-making processes. The production quality is excellent, and the scenarios are well-written. My only suggestion would be to include more business-specific scenarios. Otherwise, a fantastic tool for developing ethical thinking and team cohesion.
